Sightseeing
The first Salisbury Cathedral was completed at Old Sarum in 1092 under Osmund, the first Bishop of Salisbury. This site is walking distance from our house.
The Domesday Book is thought to have been presented to William the Conqueror at Old Sarum a few years earlier, in 1086. Disputes with the military and scarce water supplies led to an alternative location being sought and in 1220 a new site for the Cathedral was consecrated at New Sarum.
Salisbury Cathedral is home to the Magna Carta. Salisbury Cathedral’s copy is one of four which survive from this original issue. The Magna Carta is famous as a symbol of justice, fairness, and human rights.

Walking distance from the house, or a 2 minute drive. Our family regularly walk round the fort and there are also some beautiful picnic spots.
Old Sarum is one of the most enthralling and historically important sites in southern England. Uniquely, it combines a royal castle and cathedral within an Iron Age fortification, and for 150 years was a major centre of both secular and ecclesiastical government. Neither castle nor cathedral was occupied for long: in 1226 the cathedral was moved to Salisbury.

Only an hour and a half on the train to Waterloo, London. Walk over Waterloo Bridge and you are in Covent Garden, peruse the shops and watch the street entertainers. Hop on a sightseeing bus tour, to see Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and more.
