Where to see the northern lights best

You can see them easily from the outside of our house but for spotting more of them, it is better to go to an even darker place. Some of them are on this map by Tromso kommune: https://www.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=8361a696f6174429b29503fb3f9ede74&extent=2095137.3792%2C10944555.5602%2C2126209.0312%2C10964543.8431%2C102100

Aurora chasing

Our place and the whole of Kvaløya Island is great for observing the northern lights as it is a quite dark place. But in the case of overcast or worst weather, it is very difficult to see auroras through the clouds. So I recommend joining an organized aurora chasing on such a night. The tour operator takes people to places where the weather is better, up to several hours driving. The tour guides will also give valuable advice how to take good quality pictures of northern lights.

Dog sledging

Most of the kennels reside on the Kvaloya island. The biggest is Villmarksenteret which provides tours suitable for everyone, who is able to sit in the sledge. If you wish to get more personal experience, you can try one of the smaller kennels. The tours need to be book in advance.

Reindeers

The cutest animals around, you will spot them most probably wandering along the road between Eidkjosen and the bridge to Tromsøya. They let you approach very close but run away when you try to pet them. There are several options for booking reindeer sledging tours if you wish to get in close contact with them.

Whales

The whales come every year in winter to fjords on Kvaløya island. It is possible to spot them from a parking lot along the road, but for a lifetime experience you should book a tour.
